It has been reported that legislation written to protect the child custody rights of members of our military services, is receiving the support of the 63 members of the House Armed Services Committee, in hopes of having it included in the 2013 defense policy bill and being enacted into law. Allegedly, the House had approved provisions for military child custody issues on six previous defense bills, but they were rejected by the Senate Armed Services Committee. The reported provisions were designed to prevent a court from altering the child custody order that is in place at the time of the military parents deployment and changing custodial arrangements, unless the court was convinced that not doing so would be detrimental to the well being of the children involved. According to reports, supporters of the bill want to ensure that the parental rights of the men and women who serve their country are not endangered because they are out of the country protecting the freedoms that we all enjoy. Reportedly, it has been stated that military parents should not have to endure the constant fear of losing their custody rights because of their career choice.
